What are the moment of inertia and section modulus for a rectangle that is 10 in tall and 5 in wide in the vertical direction?

a. I = 416.7 in4, S = 83.33 in3

b. I = 104.17 in4, S = 83.33 in4

c. I = 416.7 in4, S = 41.67 in4

d. I = 104.17 in4, S = 41.67 in4

Answer #1

We know I=(hb^3)/12 in a vertical dirrdirec which is I_yc . Here c denotes the center of gravity. Then I = 10*125/12=104.16inch^4

And S=I/(b/2) =41.67inch^3.

It is not mentioned clearly in which direction you are taking the second moment of inertia.as per the unit consideration of the choices, only option a is correct as section modulus is in inch^3

A disk with moment of inertia I 1 rotates about a frictionless , vertical axle with angular speed W 1 =12 rad/s . A second disk, this one having moment of inertia l 2 =2l 1 and initially not rotating , drops onto the first disk. Because of friction between the surfaces , the two eventually reach the same angular speed w 2 . What is the final angular velocity of the combined system (in kg m/s^ 2 )
