why must a synchronous motor never be started when DC excitation is applied to the rotor

why must a synchronous motor never be started when DC excitation is applied to the rotor

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Rotor becomes and acts as an electomagnets on the application of DC exitation in synchronous motor. Rotating magnetic field starts turning at synchronous speed after the stator is enerzied due to which alternate attraction and repulsion of electromagnets takes place by stator rotating magnetic field. As a result of this, rotor does not rotate and rotor and power supply might damage due to high induced voltages. Thus, synchronous motor never be started when DC excitation is applied to the rotor.

Design of DC Motor Starter In order for a dc motor to function properly, it must be protected from physical damage during the starting period. At starting conditions, the motor is not rotating, and armature generated voltage EA = 0 V. Since the internal resistance of a normal DC motor is very low, a very high current flows. It is possible for a motor to be severely damaged by such currents, even if they last for only a moment. A...
