As an engineer you have been asked to investigate the criteria's for design of the sail boat mast shown. Describe in detail, in sequence steps, all the aspects of the design , all forces involved, stresses developed, and show the procedures ( describe one by one procedure that you use ) to get to final design. Assume dimension is given and material is selected.

Answer #1

The mast of the sailing ships is an arrangement of some tall spars which are erected almost vertically on the centre line of the ship. They are being designs in such a way that the wind pressure causes the movement in the ship as the mast is attached to the ship and that force will help in the further movement of the ship in the direction of the wind. Below are the design criteria and the procedure that will be used in the design of the sailboat mast and the various forces and stress on the mast will also be mentioned.

Determination of Rig Loads

  • Pretensioning of the rig is to be specified.
  • Transverse sail forces will be determined by the rigging moment.
  • Monohulls and Multiple hulls are designed on which the air pressure is acting.
  • Distribution of transverse sail forces on the main sail.
  • Self weight forces.

Determination of Working Loads

  • Force due to running rigging and halyards. The working load of halyards is generally determined by the membrane force in the sail.
  • Vang load determination. It occurs normally when reaching or running downwind.
  • Stress due to the shrouds and Headstays.

General Analysis

  • Diagonal shrouds must have a minimum angle of 9 degree.
  • Dimensioning of standing rigging made of steel rod.
  • Stability and stiffness analysis needs to be done.

So all the designing criteria are required for a sailboat mast s it is a ver vast structure and high techniques are used so it should have proper designing and after that the material selection will be which in the question is mentioned that is being done already.
