explain why we need mesh(discretization) in CFD

what is the difference between finite difference method and finite volume difference?

in ANSYS CFX which method is using?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

ANSYS CFX is using Finite Volume Method to solve the CFD problem.

The finite difference method (FDM) is a differential approach to solve the problem. Here taylors series of expansion is used to solve the problem. The value of a nodal solution depends on the other two nearby nodal values. In this there are approaches like forward differencing, backward diffrencing and central differencing. There value of the errors (residuals) will be more in this method.

The finite volume method (FVM) is an integral approach. As we are integrating in this the value of the residuals will be less.
