Answer #1

CONVENTIONAL POWER PLANT vs COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANT

Conventional power plant works on Rankine cycle. A Rankine cycle consists of Boiler, Turbine, Heat Exchanger and a pump. The basic principle of combined cycle power plant is that waste heat which is exhaust of Gas turbine is used to drive steam turbine. Exhaust of Gas turbine which is very hot comes into contact with water and steam is generated this steam passed through steam turbine which produces electricity. Combined cycle power plant uses two different cycles, Brayton Cycle and Rankine Cycle. Combined cycle power plant is more efficient than conventional power plant. A general estimate says that combined cycle power plant produces 50% more electricity than conventional power plant.

Diagram (a) is for conventional power plant and (b) is for combined cycle power plant.

Currently combined cycle power plant in Oman is at Sur Industrial Area with installed capacity of 2000 MW using combined cycle power generation.

Consider a combined gas-steam power cycle. The topping cycle is a simple Brayton cycle that has a pressure ratio of 7. Air enters the compressor at 15 ºC at a rate of 10 kg/s and the gas turbine at 950 ºC. The bottoming cycle is a reheat Rankine cycle between the pressure limits of 6 MPa and 10 kPa. Steam is heated in a heat exchanger at a rate of 1.15 kg/s by the exhaust gases leaving the gas turbine,...
