Explain briefly the difference between a conventional
power plant and a combined cycle power plant with the aid of neat
diagrams. Please mention a combined cycle power plant available in
Oman with all details such as (installed capacity, mode of power
generation and location in Oman).
CONVENTIONAL POWER PLANT vs COMBINED CYCLE POWER PLANT
Conventional power plant works on Rankine cycle. A Rankine cycle consists of Boiler, Turbine, Heat Exchanger and a pump. The basic principle of combined cycle power plant is that waste heat which is exhaust of Gas turbine is used to drive steam turbine. Exhaust of Gas turbine which is very hot comes into contact with water and steam is generated this steam passed through steam turbine which produces electricity. Combined cycle power plant uses two different cycles, Brayton Cycle and Rankine Cycle. Combined cycle power plant is more efficient than conventional power plant. A general estimate says that combined cycle power plant produces 50% more electricity than conventional power plant.
Diagram (a) is for conventional power plant and (b) is for combined
cycle power plant.
Currently combined cycle power plant in Oman is at Sur Industrial Area with installed capacity of 2000 MW using combined cycle power generation.
