For same heat input and work done/required, arrange the above cycle in decreasing order of efficiency with your justification.

Carnot cycle, Duel cycle, Carnot refrigeration cycle, Rankine cycle, Vapor compression cycle and Brayton cycle in your own words

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We had efficiencies for the " Carnot cycle, Duel cycle, Rankine cycle and Brayton cycle", and coefficient of performances for the Carnot refrigeration cycle and Vapor Compression cycle. So the decreasing order of the efficiencies are as follows,

Carnot cycle > Duel cycle > Brayton cycle > Rankine cycle

The decreasing order of the coefficient of performances is as follows,

Carnot refrigeration cycle > Vapor compression cycle

As we observe in the Carnot cycle there are completely reversible processes and heat addition and rejection takes place at a constant temperature. So this has the highest efficiency in all the processes. Duel cycle is more relevant after Carnot to increase the level of reversibility after its ranking and Brayton is the most efficient than the ranking cycle since ranking cycle loses more energy than the brayton cycle.

- a vapour-compression air-conditioning cycle where the compressor has an isentropic efficiency of 75%. Refrigerant (R12) is used as the working fluid with a mass now rate of 0.04kg/s. saturated vapour eaters the compressor at 0.5 MPa and leaves to the condenser at 1.2IMPa. The air-conditioner cools down the station to 26°C through an evaporator, and rejects heat to the 34°C ambient through a condenser. Consider a vapor compression refrigeration system suitable for a car having a heat load of 24,000Btu/hr. Assume a worst- case exterior ambient temperature of 120°F and that air is to be delivered to the passenger compartment at 40°. Use a temperature difference of 30°F betweenair and the R134 refrigerant at the two heat exchangers. The compressor efficiency is 75%. A) Determine the upper and lower pressure limits for the cycle.
