A farmer wants to pump water from a river to a very big open storage tank nearby using a 55-m long, 16-cm diameter plastic pipe with 5 threaded 90° regular bends, 5 threaded 45° regular bends, and one fully open gate valve. The water velocity near the river surface is 2.7 m/s and the pipe's inlet is placed in the river normal to the direction of water flow to take advantage of this water speed. The elevation difference between the river and the free surface of the tank is 8.0 m. For the flow conditions inside the pipe, the friction coefficient may be assumed constant at 0.015. The farmer will use a pump with a curve represented by:

h = 23 - 0.84 Q2                where h is in meters and Q in gal/min.

Calculate the volumetric flow rate at which the water is transferred to the tank at these conditions.

Water is being pumped at 20°C From an open tank through a 0.03561 m smooth pipe to a second tank at a higher level. The flow rate is 0.8 kg/s through 40 m of straight pipe with two threaded 90 regular elbows, one fully open globe valve and one half open gate valve. The supply tank maintains a liquid level of 2 m, and the water leaves the system at an elevation of 10 m above the floor. Calculate Reynolds...

A pumping system is designed to pump from a storage reservoir located at an elevation of 1015 feet. The pump elevation is 1005 feet. The pump discharge flow rate is 4500 gal/min and the water temperature is 100˚ F. Between the storage tank and the pump is 30 feet of 14-in DIP pipe (f = 0.018) with one (1) rounded entrance (kent = 0.05), and two (2) 45 -degree bends (k45 = 0.30). A pipe-pump assembly is being considered by a farmer for use in irrigating a field during summer. There is an underground water well that is 250 ft deep. The well is an open-hole type in which the free surface of water is about 8 ft below grade. To ensure that one of the pumps will operate for only a few hours per day, the farmer will fill a 2500-gallon tank in 4 hours, which will provide enough water for 2...

A pump will be used to convey water from a lake into a pressurized storage tank for a secluded cabin vacation house. If 1000 gallons of water must be delivered in 10 minutes or less, will a pump that adds 3 hp to the water be sufficient? Explain and support your answer with calculations.    Assume 2 atm for the pressurized tank, and 20 ft difference in elevation from lake to water surface level in pressurized tank. ANSWER: 3 HP...

An industrial pump is to be used to supply water from Lake Bonno to an agricultural field located 500 m away from the lake, and at an elevation of 20 m above the surface of the lake. If the horse-power of the pump is 45-hp, what is the discharge that can be delivered by using a pipe of diameter D = 0.4 m and a friction coefficient of f = 0.015? Neglect all minor losses. The tank water surface is open to the atmosphere, and the orifice drains to the atmosphere through a 100-m-long pipe. The friction coefficient of the pipe can be taken to be 0.015 and the effect of the kinetic energy correction factor can be neglected.
