(a) A hydrometer with stem diameter of 10 mm weighs 0.246 N. The hydrometer is placed in a container of water ( = 1000 kg/m3 ), and the location of the water surface is marked on the stem. Subsequently, the instrument is placed in a test liquid, and the liquid surface is 2 cm below the original mark. Estimate the density of the test liquid.
(b) A hydrometer with stem diameter of 9 mm is placed in water, and the water surface is marked on the stem. The volume of the hydrometer below the surface of the water is estimated to be 20 cm3 .
