Explain how diffusion in ceramics is different from diffusion in metals
Diffusion in ceramics is mainly due to point defects exchange with atoms, because ceramics are bonded by covalent or ionic bond inorder to break these bond extremely high amount of energy is required. Point defects such as vacancies and interstitials are involved in atomic diffusion mechanisms.
In metals diffusion atoms mainly diffuse through vacancy, subsitutional & interstitial means within the crystal. Diffusion in metals also takes place due to grain boundaries defects.
Higher temperature is required to activate ceramics as they can withstand higher temperature than metals.
