A steel pipe X feet long is able to withstand Y tonnes of tensile load. Can you trust this pipe to withstand a Y tonne compressive load? How do you know?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

There is no surety that the given pipe can withstand Y tonnes of load in compression as well. During compression ductile material fails by buckling OR by bulging. If the length of the steel pipe is long enough, then it will fail by buckling. The Euler load required for buckling can be less than the tensile load Y depending upon the dimensions of pipe. So as the diameter and length of steel pipe is not known here then we can not say that the pipe will withstand the Y load in compression.

You have a nominal 3.5-inch diameter tube steel pipe, 18 feet high that is embedded into a concrete foundation.  Neglecting the weight of the column, answer the questions below: What is the maximum vertical load this pipe can support/critical load (lb)? If a vertical load of 2,500 lbs and a horizontal force of 150 lbs are applied at the top of the column, what are the maximum combined tensile and compressive stresses (psi) where the column meets its foundation?  Are they allowable?

You have a steel cable 100 m long, that you want to use for a zipline. You set it up in the middle of summer when the temperature is 40◦C. You install it to be completely taut between its endpoints. If the temperature outside can drop to -10◦C during the winter, how much extra force do the joints holding the ends of the zipline have to be able to withstand due to the temperature changes (other than a normal load...

Let Θ ∼ Unif.([0, 2π]) and consider X = cos(Θ) and Y = sin(Θ). Can you find E[X], E[Y], and E[XY]? clearly, x and y are not independent I think E[X] = E[Y] = 0 but how do you find E[XY]?

Two firms X and Y are able to borrow funds as follows: Firm A: Fixed-rate funding at 3.5% and floating rate at Libor-1%. Firm B: Fixed-rate funding at 4.5% and floating rate at Libor+2%. Assume A prefers fixed rate and B prefers floating rate. Show how these two firms can both obtain cheaper financing using a swap. What swap strategy would you suggest to the two firms if you were an unbiased advisor? What is the net cost to each...

MIPS ASSEMBLY Have the user input a string and then be able to make changes to the characters that are in the string until they are ready to stop. We will need to read in several pieces of data from the user, including a string and multiple characters.
