23.4 Why are graphite dies widely used for hot pressing? Under what conditions would the use of graphite not be appropriate?
Graphite dies can be employed at very high temperatures upto 2000deg.C and pressure ranging between 10MPa to 30MPa.They are inexpensive and easily machinable. It has good creep resistance and its strength increases with increasing temperature. These are the reasons why graphite dies are used so widely.
Now the drawback is that graphite produces reducing environment so if the material which is to be molded is an oxide,it will vanish due to reduction. As well as it has relatively poor dimensional accuracy.
