Can an open system at steady state have boundary work?
Open system is one in which mass or energy may cross across the boundary. A steady state device is one in which mass doesnt change with respect to time. Work may cross boundary as flow work. This is motion of the fluid across the system boundary against an opposing pressure (for example turbines or compressor). In turbines, high pressure and temperature working fluid does some work on turbine blades with decreasing pressure. Here, the pressure and heat energy gets converted into mechanical work.
