A gas metal arc welding operation is performed on a material using the following conditions: Current: 400 A; Voltage: 30 V; Heat transfer factor: 0.7; Melting factor: 0.4; Um: 15 J/mm3.

(i)Determine, volume rate of welding (mm3/sec), and welding speed if the thickness of plates is 5 mm and width if the square joint is 3 mm. (10)

(ii)Assume a heat sink is placed under the plates which doubles the transfer of heat from plates. Determine the welding speed at which operation should be performed. (10)

(iii)If thickness of plates is doubled, how would this affect the welding speed and heat density. Assume that the electrode has a diameter of 5 mm.(10)

(iv)Assume lack of penetration (a defect) occurs in the joint in case (iii), what are the possible options to overcome this defect.(10)
