Describe, in words, the following processes as they relate to the iron-carbon phase diagram:

1. Annealing

2. Quenching

3. Tempering

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Annealing: it is a heat treatment that alters the physical and somtisome chemical properties of a material to increase it's ductility and reduce it's hardnesses make it more workable.

Quenching: it is a mechanical process in which steel and cast iron alloys are strengthened and hardened.

Tempering: it is a process of improving the charcteratics of a metal especially steel by heating it to a high temperature through below the melting point.this process has the effect of toughening by by lessening brittleness and reducing internal stresses

Part A - Identifying Spontaneous Processes The process of iron being oxidized to make iron(III) oxide (rust) is spontaneous. Which of these statements about this process is/are true? 1) Because the process is spontaneous, the oxidation of iron must be fast. 2) The reduction of iron(III) oxide to iron is also spontaneous. 3) The oxidation of iron is endothermic. 4) Equilibrium is achieved in a closed system when the rate of iron oxidation is equal to the rate of iron(III)...
