Why Poisson's ratio different in the elastic and plastic region?

Is Poisson's ratio usually bigger in the plastic region for metals? WHY??

Homework Answers

Answer #2

In elastic region material regains its shape during unloading. But in plastic region material deformed permanantly.poisson'ratio is defined as the ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain.in case of plastic deformation value of lateral strains are higher compare to elastic region.

so for plastic regions value of poisson'ratio is higher compare to elastic region. usually for the metals value of poisson's ratio for elastic region is 0.3 and for plastic region it is 0.5.

Assuming the elastic solution for the stresses near a crack tip is valid in the case of small-scale yielding, determine rp(q) for Mode I (Opening mode) and Mode II (Sliding mode) in plane stress and plane strain. Plot a nondimensional rp(q), ( rp/ rp(Irwin)) in the vicinity of the crack tip for several different values of Poisson's ratio.

Would you expect the elasticity of demand to be different for hospital care, physician visits, insulin for diabetes, plastic surgery, mental health care, and emergency room visits? Why or why not?
