4)   (5 pts)      Bugs on a blade can reduce power (hence energy output) by what percentage? If this turbine was totally bug covered, how much MWh would it make in a year?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The presence of bugs and other contaminants on blades of wjnd turbine can reduce the wind power output by almos 35-40% points due to increase in losses as flow on blades transits from laminar to turbulent , leading to higher losses . Maximum lift on the blades also changes due to presence these bugs and contamination , thereby reducing its performance.

If the turbine was totally bug covered, there will be huge saving of energy , the absolute amount depending upon the size of the plant, and other performance parameters.
