Are seismic wave P or S waves?what is the defference?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Seismic waves are vibrations in the earth that transmit energy and occur during seismic activity such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even man-made explosions. There are two types of seismic waves, primary waves and secondary waves. Primary waves, also known as P waves or pressure waves, are longitudinal compression waves similar to the motion of a slinky. Secondary waves, or S waves, are slower than P waves. The motion of secondary waves is perpendicular to the direction of the wave travel, similar to the motion of vigorously shaking a rope.

This question will deal with tsunamis, long-wavelength waves caused by seismic activity, bolide impacts, landslides, and in rare cases, atmospheric disturbances. Tsunamis can propagate across ocean basins and can be incredibly destructive. Tsunamis are interesting from a perspective of wave phenomena because when they are in deep water they are almost undetectable. Their wave height is on order of at most a few meters. However, they have very long wavelengths, typically 200 km. This makes their phase speed very fast....

You are in a boat traveling perpendicular to waves in water. The wave speed is 8.20 m/s, your speed is 6.80 m/s, and you are heading into the waves. If the wavelength of the waves is 8.20 m, how much time passes between hitting the top of one wave and the next? When an earthquake occurs, two types of sound waves are generated and travel through the earth. The primary, or P, wave has a speed of about 7.99km/s and the secondary, or S, wave has a speed of about 5.17km/s. A seismograph, located some distance away, records the arrival of the P wave and then, 79.8s later, records the arrival of the S wave. Assuming that the waves travel in a straight line, how far is the seismograph from the earthquake?
