It takes Yesenia 3 minutes to go 4 blocks and Alex 120 seconds to go 2 blocks. If they start at the same time and place, and they both have to go 15 blocks, who will get there first (enter Yesenia or Alex) and by how many minutes will the first person be ahead of the other? minutes (only enter the number)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Time= distance/speed

Speed (Yesenia) = distance/time = 4 block/(3minutes) = 4/3 block/min

Speed (Alex) = distance/time = 2 /120 blocks/sec = 2/2 blocks/min = 1block/min

(you can already see that Yesenia is faster and will reach first)

Time taken by Yesenia to cover 15 blocks distance with speed 4/3 blocks per min

t (yesenia) = dist/speed = 15/(4/3) = 15*3/4 = 45/4 = 11.25 minutes

Time taken by Alex to cover 15 blocks distance with speed 1 block per min

t (yesenia) = dist/speed = 15/(1) = 15 minutes

so Yesena will reach first and will be ahead of Alex by 15-11.25 = 3.75 minutes

answer is Yesenia and 3.75 minutes

(BTW 3.75 minutes means 3 minute and 45 seconds)

Snell's Law at its heart is a minimization problem. Light takes the path which takes the least time. The classic comparison is a lifeguard at a beach who needs to pick the correct path to get to a struggling swimmer in the least time. Assume the lifeguard can run at 2 meters/second on land, but can only swim at 1 meter/second. Have the lifeguard start at (0,5). The shoreline runs along the x-axis.
