A small plane can go 500 miles with the wind in the same time it can go 300 miles against the wind. The speed of the plane in still air is 180 mph. What is the wind speed?

Answer #1

Solution:

Let speed of the plane in still air be x = 180 mph, and speed of wind be y mph.

Speed of plane with the wind = (x + y) mph

Speed of plane against the wind = (x - y) mph

Plane travels 500 miles with the wind in the same time it can go 300 miles against the wind.

Speed = Distance/Time

800y = 200x

800y = 200 * 180

Therefore, speed of wind is 45 mph.
