then denote the unknowns with variables

set up the equation based on the information

and solve the system for the variable

for example : sum of two numbers is 25 . one number exceeds the other by 9 . find the numbers

solution : lets say numbers are x and y

so, x + y = 25

x - y = 9

solving the two equations by adding them up

2x = 34

dividing both sides by 2

x = 17

y = 25-17 = 8

so, two numbers are 17 , 8
