In this activity, you'll construct a segment bisector by completing a geometric construction.

In order to construct a segment bisector, a line segment that divides another line segment into two congruent segments, you will want to use a straightedge and a compass.

The first tool you need to know how to use is a straightedge, in order to create a line. A straightedge can work in many ways. If you're using actual paper and a pencil, a straightedge can be as basic as the edge of any surface that you can use to trace a line. You will also need a compass, a tool for creating circles. If you want to check your work, you may also find it useful to use a ruler or tape measure.

Follow the instructions here to complete the construction, then scan or take a photo of your final construction and upload it to submit for your project. You can also try to complete the construction using the Lesson 6 Tools of the Trade webpage. To complete the construction using the interactive tool, you'll need to take a screenshot of the completed construction, save it, and upload it to submit for your project.

Instructions for constructing a segment bisector using paper and pencil:

Step 1: Draw a line segment on your paper using a straightedge. Label the endpoints A and B.

Step 2: Place the point of a compass at A and adjust the compass to be slightly longer than half the length of AB¯.

Step 3: Then draw an arc through the line AB¯. Make sure the arc is at least a half-circle in size. Be careful to not change the compass setting.

Step 4: Keep the compass setting and place the point of a compass at B and draw an arc through the line AB¯. Make sure this arc intersects the previous arc twice- one point should be above the line AB¯ and the other point should be below it.

Step 5: Label the intersection points as C and D.

Step 6: Using a straightedge, draw a line segment through the points C and D. This segment, CD¯, is a segment bisector of AB¯.

Step 7: Label the intersection of AB¯ and CD¯ as E. Check your work by using a ruler to find AE and EB to verify they are the same length.

Step 8: Scan or take a photo of your final construction and upload it.
