Sale of y child ticket = $ ((y)x 5.40)

Sale of (186 - y) adult ticket = $ ( 9.90 x (186 - y))

Total sales of the day = Total sales of adult tickets of the day + Total sales of child tickets of the day

or,    $1400.40 = $ ( 9.90 x (186 - y)) + $ ((y) x 5.40)

or, $1400.40 = $ ( 1841.40 - 9.90 x (y) + 5.40 )

or, $ 4.50 x (y) = $ ( 1841.40 -1400.40)

or, y = $ ( 1841.40 -1400.40) /  $ 4.50

or, y = 98
