Flying against the jetstream, a jet travels 6370mi in 7 hours. Flying with the jetstream, the same jet travels 3450mi in 3 hours. What is the rate of the jet in still air and what is the rate of the jetstream?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given data

distance=6370km; time=7 hrs;

speed = distance / time

rate = 6370/7 = 910kph

With the jetstream Data:

distance=3450km; time=3hrs;

rate= 3450/3 = 1150kph

EQUATIONS:
airspeed+jetstream=1150

airspeed-jetstream=910

---------------------------------

Subtract these equations to get:

2jetstream=240kph

jetstream=120mph

airspeed+jetstream=1150

airspeed+120=1150

airspeed =1150 - 120 = 1030

Therefore rate of the jet in still air = 1030mph and

rate of the jetstream = 120mph
