In a class at a major university, three tests are given during the semester. At the beginning of the semester, there are x students in the class. Every student in the class takes the first test, and the average on the first test is 72%. After the first test, 20% of the students drop the class. Every student remaining in the class takes the second test, and the average on the second test is 75%. After the second test, 248 students drop the class. Every student remaining in the class takes the third test, and the average on the third test is 76%. If the average of all of the students’ tests during the semester was 74%, then how many students were originally in the class? (Remember: Your answer must show appropriate work or reasoning.)

A local university requires that all first year students complete a math course during first semester. This year the university is evaluating a new online version of the course. A random sample of n = 20 students is selected and the students are placed in the online course. At the end of the semester, all students take the same math exam. The average score for the sample of n = 20 students is M = 85. For the general population...

Professor Cramer determines a final grade based on attendance, two papers, three major tests, and a final exam. Each of these activities has a total of 100 possible points. However, the activities carry different weights. Attendance is worth 5%, each paper is worth 9%, each test is worth 17%, and the final is worth 26%. A chemistry class had two tests. On the first test the mean score was 70 with a standard deviation of 10. On the second test the mean score was 60 with a standard deviation of 15. The correlation coefficient between the scores of the two tests was r = 0.6. We run a regression analysis with the first test score as the independent variable and the second test score as the dependent variable. We use the result to estimate the...
