What kind of ratio would you use for measuring medicine? Give an example and solve that ratio problem.

Medicines contain various ingredients with in a vehicle. Hence, medicines should be defined in terms of concentration. Following are some ways of finding the concentration :

(i) In case of solid dissolved in a liquid vehicle it is given in weight/volume .

(ii) When liquid is administered in solid vehicle it is given as volume/weight

(iii) solid ingredient in solid vehicle is weight/weight

(iv) liquid ingredient in liquid vehicle volume/volume

Example : An ointment contains 10 grams of an ingredient made uoto 100 grams of the ointment. What is its %age concentration .

Ans : In this question both the ingredient and the vehicle are solid . Hence, the concentration will be in

weight/weight form .

10 gms ingredient in 100 gm of ointment = 10 % w/w
