An airplane encountered a head wind during a flight between Joppetown and Jawsburgh which took 5 hours and 30 minutes. The return flight took 5 hours. If the distance from Joppetown to Jawsburgh is 1300 ?miles, find the airspeed of the plane? (the speed of the plane in still? air) and the speed of the? wind, assuming both remain constant.
Let U, V be the speed of the wind and the airspeed of the plane respectively.
Now given that the distance between joppetown and Jawsburg is 1300 miles.
During the journey from Joppetown Jawsburgh speend of the wind was against the speed of the plane
so the resultant speed is = miles/hour
so we have ( 5 hours and 30 minutes is 5.5 hour)
During the journey from Jawsburgh to Joppetown speend of the wind was toward the speed of the plane
so we have
simplifying equation ( 1 ) and (2) we have
we need to find the aiirspeed of the plane , that is we need to find V
eleminating U from the above two equations we have
this means V=248.18
so that the airspeed of the plane is 248.18 (approx) miles/hour
