How to know that an integration should be solved by parts just by looking at the question?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Integration by parts can be used when the integrand of the integration is product of two different kind of functions. Suppose one function is polynomial and other is trigonometric or one function is polynomial and other functions is logarithmic/ exponential like that it can have different combinations. Sometimes integrand is not given in directly in product form but by some algebraic manipulation it can be separated out in two functions.

To choose first function (u) we usually follow the rule of ILATE.

I - Inverse Trigonometric Function

L - Logarithm Function

A - Algebraic Function

T - Trigonometric Function

E - Exponential Function .

After choosing first function (u) the other function will be by default v.

I was just looking for an explanation on this question that I missed on an exam: I purchase a 12 percent coupon bond. Based on my purchase price, I calculate a yield to maturity of 6 percet. If I hold this bond to maturity, then my return on this asset is: 6% So I know the answer I just need a little explanation. Is your return on asset the same thing as yield to maturity for a coupon bond? Or...

Question B:Consider the integral of sin(x) * cos(x) dx. i) Do it using integration by parts; you might need the “break out of the loop” trick. I would do u=sin(x), dv=cos(x)dx ii) Do it using u-substitution. I would do u=cos(x) iii) Do it using the identity sin(x)*cos(x)=0.5*sin(2x) iv) Explain how your results in parts i,ii,iii relate to each other.

In what proportion (how many proportional parts of each) should (a) 5% and (b) 1% hydrocortisone ointments be mixed to prepare a 2.5% ointment? Just give the numerical value of the respective parts of each as whole numbers only, fractional values will not be correct, do not include any units (that means do not include p or parts within the answer).
