Using the subsitiution method to solve, find the x and y intercepts and graph the system.

A) x-2y=16

4x+y=1

B) -5x+y=11

4x+12y=4

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(A)

x-2y=16

4x+y=1

use equation 1 to find value of x and subtitute it in equation 2

x = 16+2y

put into equation 2

4(16+2y) + y = 1

64+8y +y = 1

9y = -63

y = -7

x = 16+2y = 2

so answer is (x,y) = (2,-7)

(B)

-5x+y=11

4x+12y=4

calculate value of y from first equation

y = 11+5x

put this in equation (2)

4x+12(11+5x) = 4

4x+60x = 4-132

64x = -128

x = -2

y = 1

so answer is (x,y) = (-2,1)
