A new industrial oven has just been installed at Piatt Bakery. To develop experience regarding the oven temperature, an inspector reads the temperature at four different places inside the oven each half hour starting at 8:00 a.m. The last reading was at 10:30 a.m., for a total of six samples. The first reading, taken at 8:00 a.m., was 351 degrees Fahrenheit. (Only the last two digits are given in the following table to make the computations easier.) Reading 1 Reading...

After a 34-hour heat treatment at 1080°C (and subsequent cooling to room temperature), the concentration of A is 3.4 wt% at the 13.6-mm position within metal B. If another heat treatment is conducted on an identical diffusion couple, this time at 890°C for 34 hours, at what position will the composition be 3.4 wt% A? The preexponential and activation energy values for the diffusion of A in B are 3.4 × 10-5 m2/s and 156 kJ/mol, respectively.

You have a glass of water at 83 degrees C. You want to boil it by putting it in a vacuum. What is the smallest percentage of air molecules you would have to remove from the vacuum chamber to allow it to boil? Hint: to boil, the vapor pressure of water must be equal to the external pressure. (You will have to refer to a chart to figure out the vapor pressure of water at 83 degrees). (Remember, atmospheric pressure...
