Use a system of equations to solve the following problem.

A private jet flies the same distance in 88 hours that a commercial jet flies in 77 hours. If the speed of the commercial jet was 144mph144⁢mph less than 22 times the speed of the private jet, find the speed of each jet.

speed of private jet?

speed of commercial jet?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Let speed of private jet is x .

speed of commercial jet is 144 less than 2 times the speed of private jet.

so speed of commercial jet= 2x-144

We know distance= time*speed

distance by private jet in 8 hours = 8x

distance by commercial jet in 7 hours = 7*(2x-144)= 14x-1008

given this two distance are same .so

8x= 14x-1008

6x= 1008

so speed of private jet = 168 mph

speed of commercial jet= 2x-144= 2*168-144=192

speed of commercial jet =192 mph
