Question

Simplify:          3/ x2 + 5x + 4 +      2/ x2 - 1

Simplify:          3/ x2 + 5x + 4 +      2/ x2 - 1

Homework Answers

Answer #1

3 / ( x^2 + 5x + 4 ) + 2 / (x^2 -1 )

factoring the bottom of each fraction

x^2 + 5x + 4 = ( x + 4 ) ( x+ 1 )

x^2 -1 = (x - 1) (x+1)

so we can write

3 / ( x^2 + 5x + 4 ) + 2 / (x^2 -1 ) = 3 / (x + 4) (x +1 ) + 2 / (x-1) (x+1)

LCD = ( x +1 ) (x+4) (x-1)

3 ( x -1 ) /  ( x +1 ) (x+4) (x-1) + 2 ( x + 4) /  ( x +1 ) (x+4) (x-1)

= ( 3x - 3 + 2x + 8 ) /  ( x +1 ) (x+4) (x-1)

= ( 5x + 5 ) /  ( x +1 ) (x+4) (x-1)

= 5 (x + 1) /  ( x +1 ) (x+4) (x-1)

= 5 / ( x+4) (x-1)
