The primary sources of local government revenue in Cape Town are
as follows:
- Inter governmental transfers - The state government pays the
local governments so that they may function smoothly. This accounts
for a large chunk of their revenue.
- Taxes - Local governments also collect large amounts of money
from property taxes. Sales taxes contribute the next major revenue
for them. Individual income taxes are a very small portion of their
revenue.
- Charges and fees - They also levy charges and fees on many
subjects which add to their revenue.
- Property and land on lease
- Documentation of birth, death, marrriage certificates etc
