(Merger and acquisitions M&A) How do cross sectional research studies view the performance of acquisitions in the short and long run?

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • The performance of acquisitions in the short run had not been very encouraging. Short run had been filled with problems and pains due to:
    • Cash flows issues
    • Target not performing up to expectation
    • Leverage at the time of acquisition not being serviced later
    • Cultural issues
    • Employees integration issues
    • Cross border integration issues
    • Operational or monetary synergies not being realized as per expectation
    • Excessive valuation or goodwill paid
  • In the long run most of the acquisitions have been by and large successful and encouraging. This is because:
    • Short term issues have settled down
    • Long term orientation and optimism
    • Target & acquirer gets fully integrated by then
    • Synergies do start appearing and realizing

1) A cylindrical copper rod of length 2 m and cross-sectional area of 5 cm^2 is insulated to prevent heat loss through its surface. The ends are maintained at a temperature difference of 100 C by having one end in a water-ice mixture and the other in a boiling water/steam mixture. If you initially have 10 g of ice on the one end and lots of steam on the other, how long does it take to melt the ice? 2)...

A 1.0 m length of copper wire has a cross-sectional area of 0.4x10-6 m2 and carries a current of 50 mA (a fairly typical amount of current). What is the current density magnitude in this wire? What is the electron drift speed in this wire? How long will It take for an electron to travel the length of the wire (traveling at the speed you just calculated)?
