Explain why there are racial differences in drowning rates?
In USA accidental drowning is leading cause of death in youths especially african american youth. As per Centre for Disease control, in children ages between 5-14, 3 times more african americans drown than whites. There has been many theories on this inequality among different racial groups. The conventional wisdom is that the seperation of swimming pools called segregated swimming pools that has been used historically might have caused the disparity. African americans was denied access to use swimming pools and also were not exposed to swimming in early days. There is also a low rate of self-reported ability to swim among African Americans (Irwin, Irwin, Ryan and Drayer 2011).
