Yes, the traditional car industry, if not in the recent future is certainly doomed somewhere in a few years from now. Most of the world passengers would be migrating to standardized passenger modules with the onset of autonomous passenger modules as self-driving cars become more efficient in the future, One of the major reason for this change would be self-driving, mostly electric vehicles, where a passenger would just enter the destination and the car would be ready to go freeway. These vehicles have an edge over traditional cars owing to the comfort of autonomous driving and low maintenance costs.

However, this change will take substantial time, given that the current progress and efficacy of self driving cars if questionable, with the given level of research yet.
