Can marketing actions be considered ethical if they are fundamentally unsustainable? Is it ethical to steal resources and opportunities from future generations in order to increase profits today?
In my opinion, any corporate action that is fundamentally unsustainable is considered unethical. The triple bottom line of business is three Ps - People, Planet, and Profit. There are examples of great companies which are very profitable over the years, but the actions of those companies are ethically questionable. It is not enough for a company to focus on just profits, it is our obligation to care for the planet and for the future generation. So, again it is unethical to steal resources and opportunities from future generations to increase profits today. The companies must work towards building sustainable business practices.
