Gerrymandering is the practise of rearranging the boundaries of an electroral constituency so as to get an unfair a political advantage.

The word was derived from the name of the Governor of Massachusetts Elbridge Gerry and salamander. There was a similarity in the shape of salamander and newly formed voting district. The district was formed in the year 1812 when he was in charge. It was formed to favour his political party. The map was published in Boston weekly Messenger adding claws, wings and fangs to represent salamander with the title Gerry- Mander.
