How have the responsibilities of an organization's IT department changed over the last decade to make it possible for IT to be considered a profit center instead of an expense?

Earlier the IT department was just the cost center for any big organisation however over the years it has changed to profit centers and no more are cost overheads for the company.

Now many big organisations are utilizing the inhouse IT team to not just support with the IT troubleshooting but also to derive the inhouse innovation and to build on the idea of transformation or process improvement which are seeded with in the organisation. The IT team are made capable to develop on such ideas to derive the efficiency in the existing system.

This not only is saving a lot of money based on the assumption that if the same project is outsourced then company would have incurred the following cost.
