Suppose as a researcher you wish to conduct a study on the differences in examination scores between male and female students at DCC college. How would you design such a study in terms of data collection and analytical technique to isolate the significant difference if any?

Answer #1

As a researcher, we would gather the scores for a large number of students in each group - Male and female. It would be better if the number of respondents are more than 30.

We then calculate the mean of each group of scores i.e. mean of male scores and mean of female scores.

And then we can use the z distribution to find out if the difference between the means of each group i.e. means of male scores and means of the female score are statistically significant or not. If the difference is not statistically significant, then we fail to reject the null hypothesis that the means of both groups is equal. If the difference is statistically significant, then we can reject the null hypothesis that the means of both groups are equal.

A group of researchers want to determine if there are any significant differences in marital satisfaction between male and female spouses. To test this hypothesis, they collected data on marital satisfaction from 28 couples (i.e., 28 men and 28 women). They observed that the average marital satisfaction among men was 6.5, and the average among women was 6.0. The sum of squares for the difference scores (SSD) was 440. Additionally, male and female spouse marital satisfaction were strongly related (r...

You wish to test the hypothesis that female college students spend more on wearing apparel than male college students. Which of the following is INCORRECT? The null and alternate hypotheses are: Ho : mF < = mM HA : mF > mM If you concluded that female students spend more than male students when in fact there is no difference between the two groups, you would be committing a Type II error. Q1. In a study of binge drinking among undergraduates at Ohio University, a researcher was interested in gender differences as related to binge drinking and to drinking-related arrests. She wanted to know two things: (a) Is there a significant relationship between gender and binge drinking (as defined by 5 or more drinks at one sitting), and (b) Is there a significant relationship between gender and drinking-related arrests? A random sample of males and females were asked about their experiences with...
