Broadely they are divided in six categories endowment funds, commercial banks, mutual funds, hedge funds, pension funds and insurance companies. there are fewer regulation on institutional investors. hedge fund, mutual fund & endowment funds are some example of institutional investor. they are considered big player in the market whose buying & selling behaviour affect the stock price of lot of shares.
