  1. Many drugs used to treat cancer are expensive. BusinessWeek reported on the cost per treatment of Herceptin, a drug used to treat breast cancer. Typical treatment costs (in dollars) for Herceptin are provided by a simple random sample of 10 patients.

  1. Develop a point estimate of the mean cost per treatment with Herceptin.
  2. Develop a point estimate of the standard deviation of the cost per treatment with Herceptin
  1. If I have a population which is normally distributed with a mean and std. dev. of 120 and 20 respectively, what is the mean and the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the mean using a sample size of

a.                            16

b.                            25

c.                             36

d.                            100

Answer #1

a. Sample mean is a point estimate of Mean cost per treatment. use Average formula in Excel.

=average(all values) = 5550

b. Standard Deviation of the sample (use STDEV formula in excel)

=STDEV(all values) = 1003.8

c. Since the population is normally distributed, mean and standard deviation of the samples will be equal to Population Mean and Population Std Dev / n^(1/2), where n is the sample size

For Sample Size 16, Sample Mean = 120, Std Dev = 20/16^0.5 = 5

For Sample Size 25, Sample Mean = 120, Std Dev = 20/25^0.5 = 4

For Sample Size 36, Sample Mean = 120, Std Dev = 20/36^0.5 = 3.3

For Sample Size 100, Sample Mean = 120, Std Dev = 20/100^0.5 = 2

A researcher used a new drug to treat 171 subjects with high sodium. For the patients in the study, after six (6) months of treatment the average decrease in sodum level was 5.879 milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L). Assume that the decrease in sodium in a human after six months of taking the drug follows a Normal distribution with an unknown mean and a standard deviation of 2.615 mEq/L. In order to find the margin of error for a 96% confidence...

A drug, which is used for treating cancer, has potentially dangerous side effects if it is taken in doses which are larger than the required dosage for the treatment. The tablet should contain 57.89mg and the standard deviation should be 0.04. 10 tablets are randomly selected and the amount of drug in each tablet is measured. The sample has a mean of 57.885mg and a variance of 0.0002mg. Does the data suggest at α=0.05 that the tablets vary by less...

TESTING DRUGS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD The drug development process is long, risky, and expensive. It can take ten years and cost in excess of $500 million to develop a new drug. Moreover, between 80 and 90 percent of drug candidates fail in clinical trials. Pharmaceutical companies rely upon a handful of successes to pay for their failures. Among the most successful of the world's pharmaceutical companies is New York–based Pfizer. Developing a new drug involves risks and costs, and...

A study is conducted where a random sample of 12 patients undergo the new treatment and their improvement scores on a diagnostic test are compared to a control sample of 13 patients who received the standard treatment. Summary scores for both groups are shown in the...

Read the following case carefully and then answer the questions. In the movie Face/Off, John Travolta got a new look by exchanging faces with Nicolas Cage. Unfortunately, he got a lot of trouble along with it. John could receive a much less troublesome new look by using Botox, a treatment discovered by Vancouver’s Dr. Jean Carruthers, who came upon the cosmetic potential of Botox in 1982 while treating a woman with eye spasms. Botox is marketed by Allergan, a specialty...

Have you ever wondered what it means to click the “offset carbon emissions” button when you book a flight or train trip? It adds a small cost to your ticket, but how does this reduce emissions? The money is typically used to fund projects that reduce carbon emissions. One such project type is the introduction of more efficient cooking stoves into communities. Much of the world uses inefficient charcoal or wood stoves that result in excessive indoor air pollution, deforestation,...
