What property limits the performance of a traditional semiconductor-based solar cell? How is this limitation overcome in a modem Grätzel cell?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Gratzel cell or dye sensitized solar cell presented by Brian O'Regan and Michael Gratzel in 1988. This technology is based on artificial photosynthesis by which sunlight can be utilised to make energy. It is capable of absorbing more solar energy as compared to other PV solar cell, it's most important benefits is it can work in even low light, cloudy , non directed sun light. Which is not perform by semiconductor solar cell.

It is manufactured by thin conductive plastic lead, which is capable of absorbing more heat as compared to glass based solar cell. Simple to manufacture by roll printing technology.

In semiconductor based solar cell, requirement of directed sunlight, less absorption of solar energy, glass based lead etc are very serious concern. But Gratzel cell is capable of achieving all these properties.

A solar cell is built from a semiconductor material, such as Si, in contact with a metal. As we will see later, when the semiconductor is doped, an internal voltage is created within the semiconductor. When photoelectrons are produced via the photoelectric effect, these freed electrons move due to this internal voltage, creating electric current. (a) If silicon’s work function (i.e. the energy to free an electron from an atom) is 1.2 eV, what is the maximum photon wavelength that...

Use (draw) diagrams and briefly explain principles of how a solar cell generates electricity. Ideally, we will have a higher voltage in light, and a very low voltage in the dark. Was this the case? What would happen if we had a high dark voltage?

According to Henry W. Gardy, how did he promote the New South? And what aspects would define it? The New South had to become equally competitive to the north. It needed to become a place full of industries, urban development, and massive financial investment in infrastructures like railroads, bridges, factories, and buildings. In the New South, the racial separation had to become the norm because people could not live in the same social space—same streets or neighborhoods, work together, or...
