In simple terms when we add an additional signal (carrier signal) with original signal(modulating signal) to change the property of original signal it is called modulation.there are different types of modulation.modualtion is used in vast areas like communication, tv, entertainment.

Here let us take example of music.

In musics there are different keys. When we start playing a music we fix a key ,it will then define sharps and flats in the music. To make music more interesting we may have to change the key at some point. by doing this the tempo also can be changed .This can be done by modulation. Modualtion can be smooth or can be sharp.Further the peak amplitude ,speed can be changed in case of digital music using modulation techniques. The methods used in modulation are many.Modualation methods are used by musicians when playing a medely.
