Distance relay mainly used in large distance lines of high voltage AC transmission lines and distribution lines. It's very effective during the fault condition as the fault depends on the distance between the fault location and the feeding point. In the present scenario distance relays are used instead of overcurrent relays as they are relatively faster and simpler in the application and they can be used in large range applications even at high line loading.

The area of application for distance relays is between the transmission and distribution lines. Distance relays play a vital role in the protection of transmission and distribution lines in case of 3-phase faults and line faults.
