Answer #1

IC's used for balanced modulator circuit are 1496, 1596. There IC's contain. versatile circuit available for communication application. it can work at carrier frequencies upto 100 MHz.  IC's 1496, 1596 can be used as Balanced modulator or configured to perform as an amplitude modulator , a product detector or synchronous detector. Since those  IC's having versatile circuitary we can use balanced modulator circuit as synchronous detector by modifying the circuit.

Balanced Modulator : It is a circuit that generates a DSB signal, suppressing it's carrier and leaving only sum and difference frequencies at the output.

synchronous Detector :  It uses internal clock at thecarrier frequency in the reciever to switch the AM signal on and off, producing rectification similar to that of diode detector.
