Does FM has the same problem as AM in the case of over modulation?

Does FM has the same problem as AM in the case of over modulation?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

AM (Amplitude Modulation) makes the carrier wave to invert or phase shifted when the modulated signal amplitude is above a set value. It is the algebraic multiplication of two signals.

Overmodulation occurs when the modulation index is more than 1.

Overmodulation doesn't have any significant impact on FM systems. When the modulation signal amplitude is very high the frequency modulator limits the signal and it cannot push the bandwidth of the modulated signal too broad in frequency domain or spectrum. To be precise the modulating signal gets clipped.

What is the typical range of AM modulation index (depth)? What will happen if it is at the lowest value or highest value in the range? What will happen if it goes beyond the range? too low a level of modulation and the modulation does not utilize the carrier efficiently - too high and the carrier can become over modulated causing sidebands to extend out beyond the allowed bandwidth causing interference to other users.

Consider the problem Fm || Cmax. Assume that the schedule does allow one job to pass another while they are waiting for processing on a machine. Show that there always exists an optimal schedule that does not require sequence changes between machines 1 and 2 and between machines m − 1 and m. Please provide a theoretical proof rather than a numerical example.

TO CLARIFY: I am confused about part b) of the problem. a) A display case contains thirty-five gems, of which ten are real diamonds and twenty-five are fake diamonds. A burglar removes four gems at random, one at a time and without replacement. What is the probability that the last gem she steals is the second real diamond in the set of four? b) Then, suppose that the burglar removes 10 diamonds instead. How many real diamonds is she more...

I am comparing an equally weighted portfolio vs an optimal portfolio with the same data. The Equally weighted porfolio has a higher sharpe ratio but lower $ return, while the optimal portfolio has a lower sharpe ratio and a higher return. My questions is Is this possible or does the higher sharpe ratio always have to the highest $ return Was it better to diversify and why?
