Consider a radar with a PRF of 5 kHz. What is the maximum unambiguous range Rua of this radar, in km? If a target is located at a range of 50 miles, how many pulses will the radar have transmitted before the first echo from the target arrives? What will be the apparent range of the target, in kilometers?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

PRF(Pulse repetition frequency ) = 5 KHz

PRT = 1/PRF = 1/(5x103) =2x10-4 sec.

Rmax(Maximum unambiguous range of radar) = C.(PRT-PW)/2

Since, pulse width isn't given, we can expect that the transmitted pulse is short and can be overlooked.

  • Rmax = C.PRT/2 =(3x108x2x10-4 )/2
  • Rmax = 30,000 m = 30 km.

Target is located at a range of 50 miles, R= 50 miles

or R= 50x1.609 = 80.45km.

Let the no. of pulse the radar transmits before the reverberate from the objective arrives be N.

N= R/Rmax = (160.9/2)/30 =2.68

Therefore, N=3.

Presently, X MOD Y -> Frac(X/Y) x Y

Evident range of target, RA = R MOD [(C x PRI)/2]

  • RA = 80.45 MOD [((3x108x2x10-4)/2) x 10-3]
  • RA = 80.45 MOD 30
  • RA = 20.45 Km

Suppose the parameters of a radar are such that the power of the echo from a particular target is just detectable at a range of 50 miles. If the target RCS is reduced by 10 dB, what will be the new detection range? By how many dB must the RCS be reduced to reduce the detection range to 5 miles?

Dolphins emit sound bursts that range in frequency from 1 Hz to 120 kHz. Say that a dolphin is using a sound burst consisting of these frequencies as a form of sonar (like the bat example). Let the burst last for a time interval of 10 ms, after which it listens for 100 ms. Say that the logarithmic intensity (loudness) of the dolphin’s sound is 50 dB as measured at 1 m away. Dolphins can hear sounds that are 2...

Consider a classroom filled with air. Let’s approximate air as an ideal gas of N2-molecules (nitrogen) at normal conditions (P = 1 Bar and T = 300 Kelvin). Suppose the room has dimensions of 10 m by 10 m by 10 m (a pretty large auditorium). Let us also assume that N2 molecule has 5 degrees of freedom (3 translational and 2 rotational).
