A 20 ohm resistor, a 0.01H inductor and a 100uF capacitor are connected in series to a 200V DC supply. The capacitor is initially uncharged. Find the maximum instantaneous current.

Please show equation and all steps.

Answer #1

Answer :- An uncharged capacitor works as an short circuit path and as it starts charging the current value decreases. After fully charged, capacitor provides infiinte resistance and hence block the current flow.

For DC supply, inductor always provides shorted path and hence have zero resistance. As we know for DC, frequency f = 0 and inductive reactance = 2*pi*f*L.

Thus for the given situation, the instantaneous maximum current is equal to voltage source divided by the resistance value. Imax(ins.) = 200/20 A = 10 A.
