A generic IP phone to work requires basically two components they are the Hardware component's and the software components.

The Hardware component's are as follows:

* Speaker phone & a microphone

* Keypad or touchpad to enter phone number and text.

* Display unit

* General purpose macro processor to process application message

* AD &DA converter to convert voice to digital data & vice Versa

* Ethernet or wireless network hardware to send and receive messages on data network

* Power source a battery or DC or AC source

The software components requires standard networking components such as TCP/IP network stack, client implementation for DHCP and the Domain Name System (DHCP). It also uses signalling protocol.
