The specific strength of a material can be defined as the ratio of it's strength to it's density.
The reasons for the high specific strength of fibre size materials are :
1. Specific energy of fibre is high.
2. An appreciable length of a vertical column of the material that could suspend it's own weight when fixed at top.
3. specific energy of rotation with respect to centrigugal force is also considerable.
4. The Fibres are typically produced by high temperature processing.
5. Low specific weight in natural fibres also adds to good specific strength.
6. orientation of fibres in one or many directions is possible.
7. Various combinaations of specific resins & reinforcements are possible which help customising of formulation to achieve desired specific strengths.
8. Capability of withstanding the load from all directions is appreciable.
As all these features are not to be observed in the bar form of the materials, good Specific strength is possible only with fibre form of materials.
